Recently, I was contacted by a central California non-profit organization interested in commissioning me to create a piece of art. They had seen my paintings online, and were seeking a similar artistic style to portray the icon of their latest project; a vintage motel sign.

Prior to contacting me, this organization had spent the year tearing down a retro, small town motel structure. This once iconic location, hosting travelers in route to Yosemite, had turned into a den of evil used for prostitution and drug abuse. In  place of the motel, they built a state of the art youth facility.

Where there was prostotution, there are now PlayStations. Where there was meth addicts, there are now mentors.

To them, the vintage sign stands as a symbol of transformation to the community. The landmark communicates how a group of concerned citizens can effect change for good, and bring a beacon of hope to a desperate neighborhood.

This much needed hope is found in the person of Jesus Christ. It is because of their love for Jesus and their love for people that this local church decided to step up and transform a neighborhood. It is because of the change that has occurred in their own lives, because of their trust in Jesus, that they were compelled to share this incredible gift with others.

Today, you have an opportunity to make a difference in the world that you occupy. May you first be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ, and then in turn be compelled to share that love to others.

“We love because he first loved us.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬
