You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. Psalm 89:9 NIV

Trending the Family

It was a woven couch with a myriad of colors all blended together, to the touch it was somewhere between comfy and itchy. We sat four deep as my mom tried to figure out how to use her camera. The time between when people are ready for the picture and when the picture is taken is always an interestingly awkward gap. Most people end up afraid to blink, smile, or speak, fearing it will thwart the picture and have to endure the amateur photo session all over again. On my lap was my firstborn infant son, slobbering on his hand; he didn’t mind the wait at all. On my left was my dad, who in this moment became a couch certified expert on camera use, thus giving instructions to my mom on how to take a picture. On his left was my grandfather. Grandpa didn’t fuss much, and we had just eaten, so he was drifting intermittently between smile and snore. At any moment, we could lose the family’s patriarch to nap time. This was a beautiful moment, one definitely worthy of taking a picture, no matter how long it took. Four generations of Boone men, all in a row on one couch.

By default, my son would inherit a few things. We each had a cleft chin, in fact all our facial structures were similar. We were all wearing glasses, so the likelihood of my son needing them was pretty high. Most importantly, the three older men followed Jesus Christ, hopefully my son would also.

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, ‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.’ ”
Psalm 89:1-4 NIV

Regardless of how your family of origin has unfolded, The Lord will always remain faithful to you. God has built a new family tree of those who place their trust in Jesus Christ, and He is inviting you to join in faith. Allow The Lord to redefine your generational trends, there is an eternally functional family for you to be a part of; and God is our Heavenly Father.
