The Pleasure of Heaven
ARTIFACT • DOVE
The portable hot tub had reached the perfect temperature. We had the crazy notion that we should set it up right in the middle of the room, so we made a runway of towels all the way to the bathroom. The place was filling up quickly with students, parents, grandparents, and other eagerly invited family and friends. The band was all tuned up and ready to play. Moving to gather everyone’s attention I remember thinking, “Nothing says party like baptisms!” The front row was full of excited high school students in board shorts and swim wear. Each of them had made the decision to place their faith in Jesus Christ, and they were trusting in God for salvation. Not a single story the same, they stood up to give testimony. These teenagers began to explain how God had been working to grow them and the difference having faith in Jesus Christ was making in their lives. After sharing their faith experiences, each student climbed up the steps into the temporary spa of water, and was baptized into the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. It was a spiritually exhilarating moment to watch unfold, and as the final student entered into the tank I could barely contain my excitement. This was a holy moment.
I UNDERSTOOD A HINT OF HOW GOD MUST FEEL.
This last student was my son. As I placed my arm around him, on the verge of tears myself, I asked him two questions. “Is it true that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation?” “Yes.” “Is it your desire to follow Jesus Christ for the rest of your life?” “Yes.” It was public. This profession of faith was his own. Looking down at my son in the water, I savored the smile on his face looking back up at me. I couldn’t help but say it out loud, “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Matthew 3:16-17 NIV
