I was so excited to paddle out. I had thought about this moment so often as I sat in class that semester, just waiting for the next trip to the beach. My dad and I had decided to make a trip of it and headed south for a few days. Suited up, and now in the water, the state of how I felt was pretty close to giddy. Heading to the peak of the waves, I turned my board and began to paddle into the pocket. My surfboard began to lift from the pressure of the swell, and I pushed the fiberglass forward and moved my feet into position crouched low. Harnessing the incredible power of the break while standing next to a wall of water as if peers, catching waves is certainly a surreal experience. As we continued to surf, my position in the line up began to change unbeknownst to me. Wave by wave, I began to drift with the flow of the water. As the water became increasingly difficult to paddle against, the breaks were now crossing over each other making it impossible to catch anything. Exhausted, I took a moment to see where my dad was. He wasn’t anywhere near me in the water, so I looked to see if he had decided to head in. Standing there, next to a lifeguard, they both waived their arms, yelling at me, motioning for me to paddle to the right.
I WAS CAUGHT IN A RIP TIDE.
I was unable to see my error, and I needed someone else to correct me.
“If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness— and I will not lie to David— that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.”
Psalm 89:30-37 NIV
Whether they are intentional or not, our sins have to be dealt with properly. One of the many beautiful things about our God is that He both provides the solution to correct our sin in Jesus Christ, and He faithfully offers His love. Today, allow Jesus to be your surf patrol, lovingly rescuing you to safety.
