Saving Up

…always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:20 NIV

Gratitude comes pretty easy when the circumstances of life are favorable. When things are going well, most people enjoy a good ride around the block on the thanksgiving bandwagon. As life plates dessert, a grin from ear to ear seems effortless. After all, who does not enjoy a huge serving of delicious dessert? However, the proteins and greens of life help us maintain health, and there are four basic ways that each of us needs to experience growth. We need to develop mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. When any or all of these life giving components seem to be compromised, we often experience a full force attack on our joy wealth. Our hearts have a great potential for treasure, deposits of joy stored for safekeeping, creating bandwidth for the ups and downs of the roller coaster of life. We each have the choice of when to deposit joy, and when to make a withdrawal. Interestingly enough, our joy investment begins to exponentially mature, when we see every perceived setback as an opportunity to rejoice. Upon recognition of this great treasure, each of us must determine how we spend our joy wealth. Eventually, we are bound to spend our joy on something, or better yet, someone deserving.

I had been saving money since I was a kid. My dad had taught me that every time I earn a wage, the first portion should go to God, the second to long term savings, and the rest to the current expenses of life. Dad also helped me understand the difference between a need and a want. I can still remember the day that I saw the for sale sign in the Volkswagen bus on the side of the road. Instantly, I knew I wanted to be the owner. I rushed home to pitch the purchase idea to him. I wanted to spend my hard earned treasure. Jesus Christ invites you to see Him as the Treasure for which your life is worth spending. He desires to be your joy target. When you desire Jesus, the treasure that is your joy wealth will overflow.

“I am thanking God today that He brought you into my life, may our joy, relationship, and treasure be centered on Jesus Christ.”
