30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Jesus begins to explain the heavenly accounting system. Apparently, someone in heaven has the job of counting everyone’s hair. This would be an incredibly weird job. I wonder when they actually do the counting, maybe while you are sleeping.
Possibly, the hair counting angel has to tip toe in your room in the middle of the night and start numbering each individual hair. What if you rolled over in the middle of the counting session, does the angel have to start over again, or did he leave a bookmark so he could come back to the same place?
What about when the hair counting angel comes to some of your rooms while you are sleeping and they discover your hair is curly? Do they call back to their supervisor, “Hey boss, we got some nap going on down here, I’m gonna be here awhile, can you push the rest of my appointments off till tomorrow?”
What about when the hair counting angel comes to one of your rooms while you are sleeping and they discover your hear is bald? Do they swoop their wing down to count and yell, “Negative!” Then they call upstairs once again, “Hey boss, can we get the shine crew down here to buff this dome out a bit?”
So I started counting my own hair just for fun. I started with my beard, because it was closest. I sat there looking in the mirror, “One, two, three…” and then I got bored and I asked Siri how many hairs were on my head.
Siri told me that humans heads have an average hair count. If a person has red hair, there are about 90,000 hairs on their head. If a person has black hair there are about 110,00 hairs on their head. Finally, if a person has blonde hair there are about 140,000 hairs on their head. Seriously, Siri must have been there for quite awhile to figure that one out.
What is the point of Jesus telling us about the heavenly accounting system?
GOD KNOWS YOU INTIMATELY.
In fact, if God knows how many hairs are on your head, than He knows you better than you know yourself. You do not even know the exact number of hairs on your head, but God does. In fact, for all you ladies out there, God even knows how many strands are stuck in that brush you use every morning, you know, the one that looks like a sleeping cat on your bathroom counter.
Sparrows are cheap and insignificant, yet God takes care of them.
The hairs on your head seem countless, yet God had numbered them.
If God cares about sparrows and hair, how much more does God care about you?
The whole point of this teaching is to eliminate your fear. Don’t be afraid of what happens…
- to your body, because God is protecting your soul.
- in your significance, because God sees you as incredibly valuable.
- in the details of your life, because God knows you better than anyone.
God is protecting your soul, He considers you extremely valuable, and He knows you intimately.
Jesus wraps all this together into one beautiful sentence.
31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Today is a fresh opportunity to surrender your fears to Jesus Christ. Try writing down your fears on a piece of paper, then praying about each one of them, asking God to take that fear from you and replace it with faith in Him. Then spend some time reading The Holy Bible. Allow God to be concerned about your fears, while you focus on being concerned with God.
