A good friend from Philadelphia and I had been asked to lead a summer camp for a week up in Oregon. His invitation was to unpack God’s Word in such a way that the high school students attending the camp could enter into an understanding of who God is and how to enter into a thriving relationship with Him. Mine was to lead times of worship through music, to help us all focus on how worthy God is of our hearts. Today offered a unique twist to it, as the camp staff led an optional hike up to a well known vista. I was all in, undeterred by the distance we needed to travel, and I wanted to experience this first hand. After a little over an hour of hiking, we arrived to a suddenly steep and jutting peak. A small stair case wound up and around the side of the natural monument, and I made my way to the top. Reaching the precipice, a small structure was perched on high, an unoccupied fire lookout. It was just large enough for one person to sit inside and view out in all four directions. Surrounding the building was a chain link fence, to prevent anyone from tumbling off. I was rather thankful for his safety feature and it seemed pretty normal until I looked down and realized I was also standing on a walkway made from the same material. My eyes opened wide, heart started pounding, and a rush came over me.
I WAS SUSPENDED IN MID AIR.
The vast expanse before me was daunting. I could literally see for hundreds of miles. East to the state border, West to the ocean, the view demanded my appreciation. I was very small in comparison to Creation.
“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Isaiah 40:25-26 NIV
