SESSION THREE

The entourage of fifteen passenger rental vans traveled down the dirt road. Potholes everywhere, excitement grew with each bump. It was Easter Sunday, and we had just attended an eye opening outdoor multicultural church service. It was day three of an eight day trip, and adrenaline was pulsing through everyone’s veins. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we would begin the cross cultural service projects at neighborhood churches and local organizations. Today, we were heading towards the ocean, and nothing gets students excited like a trip to the beach. We swarmed the Baja coastline, finding unoccupied sand for our group to settle. Uniting around the truth of Scripture, students and staff humbled their hearts before God. One by one, as an act of worship, students prayerfully drew images and messages to God in the sand.

THE WAVES AND THE WIND ACCOMPANIED US IN WORSHIP.

SESSION FOUR

60 Worst Fears, the Keeper of Souls, and the Market Value of birds; so hair count is obviously the next logical subject.

Matthew 10:30
30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Jesus begins to explain the heavenly accounting system. Apparently, someone in heaven has the job of counting everyone’s hair. This would be an incredibly weird job. I wonder when they actually do the counting, maybe while you are sleeping.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

SESSION THREE

60 Worst Fears, the Keeper of Souls, what should come next in this interesting discourse? Let’s talk about birds. After all, that is what Jesus does.

Matthew 10:29
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

Jesus begins to explain the market value of a sparrow. Two sparrows are worth one penny. Allow me for a moment to get my nerd on.

SESSION TWO

The word soul is used in some very distinct ways.

  • Those who did not quite make it to the spelling bee might immediately think about the sole of their foot.
  • Some might point to soul food, where a culinary artist has poured both talent and heart into a slow cooked, mouth watering, masterpiece.
  • Others begin to speak of soul mates, that one special person in the universe who was spiritually created for the purpose of being a mystical “other half.”

In fact, there are still others who try to categorize all of humanity into seven types of souls:

60 Worst Fears

SESSION ONE

Fear is such a powerful thing. With the ability to motivate or debilitate, fear can hold an incredible amount of control in our lives. The weird thing about fear is, while it has absolutely no material substance, it impacts our physical nature deep down to the core of our lives. Being that each of us is uniquely hardwired, we each experience fear differently. In fact, there are so many different types of fears, just thinking about the possibilities has me intrigued. With a more than ordinarily peaked interest, I decided to reach out to my friends via social media and asked them to publicly bear their naked souls, divulging to me and the entire web universe their worst fears.

Below is the list they came up with, a total of 60 worst fears.

SESSION TWO

We pulled off to the side of the road four miles north of Santa Cruz. Light had just started to spread across the sky, and the wind began to kick. Changing into our wetsuits in the near dark, we heard the huge slamming sound echo through the inlet and up over the cliff. A pumping adrenaline started to build and saturate my entire being as I anticipated the session, preparing for the rush that awaited me down the narrow path. Grabbing my bright yellow nine foot six Walden, entitled Big Chiquita, I followed my partner to sea level. Paddling straight out wasn’t even an option, the waves were massive. So, we climbed the cliff wall and walked on a ledge fifty yards to where the break was peaking. Boards in hand we jumped off the cliff into the swell. It was all or nothing, there was only one way home. Paddling into a wave I was immediately consumed, surging in the belly of the swell I didn’t know which way was up. My board was ripped away, leash cut in half, and I came up grasping for air twenty yards off shore.

THIS BREAK DEMANDED MY ATTENTION.

SESSION ONE

It was a woven couch with a myriad of colors all blended together, to the touch it was somewhere between comfy and itchy. We sat four deep as my mom tried to figure out how to use her camera. The time between when people are ready for the picture and when the picture is taken is always an interestingly awkward gap. Most people end up afraid to blink, smile, or speak, fearing it will thwart the picture and have to endure the amateur photo session all over again. On my lap was my firstborn infant son, slobbering on his hand; he didn’t mind the wait at all. On my left was my dad, who in this moment became a couch certified expert on camera use, thus giving instructions to my mom on how to take a picture. On his left was my grandfather. Grandpa didn’t fuss much, and we had just eaten, so he was drifting intermittently between smile and snore. At any moment, we could lose the family’s patriarch to nap time. This was a beautiful moment, one definitely worthy of taking a picture, no matter how long it took. Four generations of Boone men, all in a row on one couch.

IF THERE WERE GENERATIONAL TRENDS, WE SET THEM.
